When Your Child is Sick: Holding Onto Faith in Difficult Moments

As I sit here in the pediatrician’s office for the second time in less than a month, I have to admit—I feel sad and helpless. Watching my child go through illness again stirs up so many emotions. It’s hard not to sink into the “why” questions. Why does my baby keep going through this? Why can’t I just take it away?
But in this moment of exhaustion and worry, I’m reminded of two powerful truths:
1️⃣ The power of prayer
2️⃣ God’s perfect will, even when I don’t understand
Turning Worry Into Prayer
When our kids are sick, our natural instinct is to fix it—to find the right medicine, schedule the doctor’s visits, and make them as comfortable as possible. But while we do those things, we also have an opportunity to turn our worry into worship and our frustration into faith.
Instead of dwelling on the uncertainty, I’m choosing to speak God’s promises over my child:
- “By His wounds, we are healed.” – Isaiah 53:5
- “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
- “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16
If you’re sitting in a waiting room today or pacing the floors at home, you are not alone. God sees you, and He sees your child. He is holding both of you in His hands.
How to Strengthen Your Child’s Faith in This Season
As much as this is a struggle for us as parents, it’s also an opportunity to model faith for our children. Here are a few ways we can help them lean on God when they’re feeling weak:
1️⃣ Pray With Them 🙏
Even if they don’t feel well, pray over them and invite them to pray with you. Let them hear you calling on God for healing, peace, and strength.
2️⃣ Speak Words of Faith Over Them 📖
Instead of saying, “You’re so sick,” try saying, “God is healing your body even now.” Speak life-giving words over your child so they begin to believe in the power of prayer.
3️⃣ Play Worship Music & Healing Scriptures 🎶
Create an environment of peace by playing worship songs or Bible affirmations. Let the Word of God fill your home with comfort and encouragement.
4️⃣ Teach Them to Thank God in All Circumstances ✨
Even when they’re sick, remind them that God is still good. Help them find small things to be grateful for—snuggles with mom, a favorite blanket, or a kind nurse. Gratitude builds faith!
5️⃣ Trust God Openly ❤️
Let your child see you trusting in God, even when you don’t have all the answers. Your peace will give them peace.
Encouragement for the Weary Mom
Mama, I know this is hard. It’s exhausting to care for a sick child while carrying the weight of worry, sleepless nights, and unanswered questions. But let me remind you:
💛 You are not alone. God is walking through this with you.
💛 This is temporary. Healing is coming, even if it takes time.
💛 You are doing a great job. Your love and prayers are powerful.
